Calgary Expo 2015: Pre-Event Press Highlights
Events that garner significant press coverage can often be their own worst enemy; when the story is the event in itself, media may not recognize that there may be stories to tell before the event occurs. For event producers, pre-event press is solid gold. Communicating what those pre-event stories is vital to the success of an event when the goal is to raise awareness and sell tickets. In the case of Calgary Expo, we were spoiled with ideas, and the Calgary community was eager to champion the 10th anniversary as its nerdiest little success story.
We were blessed with so much incredible attention, but here a few of my favourites…
CTV EVENING NEWS FEATURES
A rare look inside Calgary Expo HQ to meet the show’s founder, and to the team about what it’s like to be prep for a 10th anniversary that could have never imagined in year one.
CTV also touched base with some local cosplayers before the show opened, which we loved to see!
WHERE MAGAZINE – COVER STORY
One of the highlights of Calgary Expo this year was the ‘discovery’ of a thrilling local artist named Lianne Moseley. I say ‘discovery’ because although her instagram shows her incredible work isn’t necessarily ‘new’, until this year when she started getting media attention for her incredible make up artistry that transforms normal citizens into superhero supermodels, I had never seen her work or any work like it. And I wasn’t the only one to discover her; before long she intrigued the editor WHERE magazine, which landed her this cover spread to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Calgary Expo, and soon lots more media attention, and the attention of celebs like Amy Poehler and Ashton Kutcher. BOOM! POW! A star is born. I can’t wait to see what Lianne does next! Couldn’t have asked for a better cover.
THE MARY SUE – FAN ENGAGEMENT CONTEST: THE ULTIMATE COSPLAY CONTEST
“Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo has been a huge supporter of Cosplay is not Consent and is heavily involved in their local fan community – but they wanted to take their support of cosplayers and fandom a step further. That’s why we here at The Mary Sue are teaming up with Calgary Expo to announce The Ultimate Cosplay Contest!” – Sam Maggs for The Mary Sue
One contest, hundreds of entries, 10 finalists, and one final winner: Bronson, as Gypsy Danger. I’m not ashamed to admit that I was overwhelmed as more than once as a I sorted through dozens and dozens of mind-blowing submissions for this contest. The talent that was submitted truly blew me away. Between the submissions, voting process, and announcement, Calgary Expo attracted a whole new North American audience to Calgary Expo, and by partnering with a wide-reaching, equality promoting, cosplay-friendly media outlet, we showed the entire cosplay community just what an exciting showcase and playground Calgary Expo is. Take a look at the entries and learn more about the winner, Bronson, from British Columbia.
METRO NEWS – GUEST NEWS: NEIL PATRICK HARRIS’ SURPRISE ONE-DAY APPEARANCE AT CALGARY EXPO
Getting to be a part of this announcement, on the Thursday of the show, after days of anticipation – pretty sweet.
