Tony Awards 2016: Predictions

Tony Awards 2016: Predictions

Hey guys, welcome to Tony Week!

Will you be watching this Sunday? Follow along on Twitter and snapchat @AlexKGT. I can’t wait!

Possible upsets? I’d watch Best Revival of a Musical because it’s a REALLY strong category. I was leaning towards She Loves Me, but I love how Spring Awakening was reinvented by Deaf West to incorporate a cast of deaf actors. The question is whether or not it was as successful and if voters will vote for a show that has already closed. The most popular contender: The Color Purple, because this revival seems to be worlds better than the original which was only a few seasons ago.

Another slot to watch: Supporting Actress in a Musical – Angelica (Renee Elise Goldberry, Hamilton) is fierce AF but there is a lot of love for Jennifer Simard’s scene-stealing songs in Disaster! The Musical.

And now, the pundant in me speculates that the gents from Hamilton nominated for Best Actor in a Musical (Leslie & Lin) COULD split the vote and make room for Danny Burstein (Fiddler on the Roof) to take the spot. He is lovely and universally well-liked in the community. Hey… it could happen. In 1987 the actors playing “Javert” and “Valjean” in the original company of Les Miserables split the vote and lost to Bill Snibson from Me and My Girl. Then again – during the Wicked year voters went with their wicked hearts and gave it to Idina Menzel over Kristen Chenoweth (both starring as leads and nominated against each other). So… there is precedent either way.

Oh man… now I’m doubting Best Actor in a Play (could it be Jeff Daniels??) and Revival of a Play (does Blackbird have a shot?). Breathe, everyone…

Want to know what the critics predicted? New York Times, Vanity Fair, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Time Out, New York Magazine.

AK

ps – did you know THIS happened with the Hamilton cast? “Daaamn…” – “Thomas Jeffereson”, Hamilton
